Healthy Morning Habits of Entrepreneurs

Starting your day off on the right foot can be the difference between a feel-good, productive day, and a slow-moving, inefficient day. Discipline is key in being a successful entrepreneur, which is why it’s essential to build healthy and invigorating habits into the first part of your day.

Sticking to a healthy routine can get your mind and body ready to take on whatever comes your way, not to mention it can inspire creativity. Follow these healthy morning habits of entrepreneurs that will spark innovation from your first cup of joe.

Wake Up Early

Waking up early is one of the best ways you can start your day off right. Many successful entrepreneurs rise earlier than others, giving themselves to enjoy a cup of coffee and mentally prepare for the day ahead. This small change will encourage productivity throughout the day.

Starting your day earlier than you need to might seem daunting at first, but you’ll quickly find that you enjoy your alone time in the mornings. You don’t need to wake up at 3 am to accomplish this — try waking up earlier in 30-minute increments to start. Going to bed earlier can also help alleviate the morning exhaustion, so aim to be in bed by 9 or 10 pm.

Avoid Social Media and Email

Many of us wake up, and the first thing we do is check our social media or email. This habit often starts our day off on the wrong foot because even though we might not realize it, our subconscious mind is absorbing those posts you see, affecting stress levels and influencing your thoughts.

If you check your social media or emails first thing in the day, there’s a good chance you’ll spend even more time that day scrolling through. Many successful entrepreneurs ensure they aren’t distracted by social platforms by putting their phones on airplane mode before they go to sleep. When you wake up, you won’t be overwhelmed with emails, notifications and other distractions that might encourage you to jump on Facebook or reply to that email.

Instead, create a to-do list for yourself in the morning that will set you up for success for the rest of the day, such as:

  • Meditating
  • Reading
  • Exercising
  • Journaling
  • Prioritizing your tasks

Focus on Priorities

Did you know you have the most willpower in the morning? As the day goes on, you become tired and your self-control decreases. This is why it’s beneficial to focus on your priorities in the morning. For example, if you’ve been prolonging a task that you need to get done, add it to your list of priorities for the morning.

Mark Twain said, “If you eat a live frog for breakfast, you can go through the rest of your day knowing the worst is behind you.” Get your most dreaded priority over and done with, when your willpower and motivation are high.

By creating a list of priorities for each day, you can avoid distractions and have clear, set goals. At the end of the day, write a list of priority items for the next day. Set Goals

Using the morning to set and review your goals is another healthy habit many entrepreneurs follow. It’s impossible to know what your priorities are if you don’t have goals you’re working towards. Reminding yourself of what you’re trying to achieve short-term—or long-term—can help keep you motivated throughout the day.

You don’t necessarily need to have moonshot ideas. If you’re motivated by quick and easy results, you can start small with daily, weekly or monthly goals. You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment by achieving these near-future objectives.

If you have a longer-term goal, set achievable quarterly objectives to get there and write down a date for when these goals should be achieved. Review these targets and check your progress toward reaching them. Is there anything you should be doing differently? Are you on track to achieving your goals? Remind yourself of your reason “why” everyday to help you stay focused.

Engage in Creative or Deep Work

Many entrepreneurs find their creative juices flow best in the morning. Use this time to accomplish your creative tasks. Marketing, writing and designing are all great tasks to start in the early hours when your focus is sharper and you’re feeling more imaginative.

Ideation is also a great habit to start in the early hours of your day when you’re feeling refreshed, and when the creative connections in your brain are most active. This is because as you wake up, your prefrontal cortex is the most active, which is where creativity is derived.

Additionally, with a greater attention span and a revitalized brain in the early hours, many entrepreneurs do their analytical and demanding work in the morning. As we wake up, our body temperature rises, making us more alert and increasing our energy levels. Tackling work that requires focus and concentration is best done before your energy dips and willpower runs dry.

Track Progress

Many accomplished entrepreneurs set aside time in the morning to journal. Writing in a journal not only provides mental clarity, but it can also help you analyze the progress you’ve made week over week, quarter over quarter and even year over year. There’s no better feeling than looking back at where you started and seeing how far you’ve come to achieve your goals.

Journaling can also boost your memory, inspire creativity, relieve stress and motivate future accomplishments. Additionally, by keeping track of your day-to-day progress, you can review what habits worked well for you and what didn’t. For example, you may recognize that you were more productive on days you exercised before work and less productive on days you didn’t eat breakfast.
